Since 2004, the installation of smoke detectors has been mandatory in all homes in Wallonia. This measure aims to reinforce occupant safety and prevent the risks associated with domestic fires.
What does the law say?
Every dwelling must be equipped with at least one smoke detector per inhabited level. This applies to :
- Single-family homes
- The apartments
- Studios
- Student kots
The owner is responsible for the installation and initial operation of the detector.
The AIS technical department ensures that each of its homes is equipped with a smoke detector.
Secondly, the tenant is responsible for regular maintenance (replacing batteries, checking correct operation, etc.).
Remember to :
- Test the detector regularly
- Replace batteries if necessary (if the detector beeps every 30 seconds, the batteries need replacing).
- Notify us if you notice that a detector is no longer working.
No detector = violation!
A home without a smoke detector may be considered non-compliant and lead to :
- Administrative penalties
- Insurance problems in the event of fire
